A Denil fishway in Dunnville, Ontario was built to provide upstream passage for walleye Stizostedion vitreum from Lake Erie to the Grand River. Modest numbers of walleye have been observed to use this fishway.
Fishway Attraction Enhancement
Two Denil fishways on the Grand River, Ontario, have been monitored for activity by several dozen fish species annually since 1994
Mannheim Fishway Passage
We compared two Denil fishways, located on the west (low velocity – 10 % slope) and east (high velocity – 20% slope) side of the Mannheim weir, Grand River, Ontario
Northern Pike Annual Fish Lift
Movement of northern pike from the Grand River in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada to spawning areas in tributary creeks is directly related to reproductive success and production. Limited populations
Fish Movement at the Springbank Dam: Before-After Study
The City of London and the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority contracted Biotactic Incorporated to design and conduct a study to collect baseline data related to fish movement
Sea Lamprey Telemetry Noise and Range Tests
In September of 2007, we performed acoustic tests in the St.Mary’s and Mississagi Rivers to determine the feasibility and logistics of an ultrasonic telemetry study of the movement of sea lampreys at various locations
Blue Sucker Tracking
In October 2004 we implanted thirty Texas state endangered blue suckers (Cycleptus elongatus) with radio transmitters that we (Bio-West, Austin and Biotactic) monitored continuously
Black Redhorse Ecology
In October 2007 a large pool in the Grand River near Kitchener, Ontario was sampled using seine nets for adult black
Hydro-Electric Turbine Impact Evaluation
Smolts require access to the fishway (i.e., the fishway must be open and operational) during their downstream migration. In our professional opinion, the Maple Hill Dam fishway, Saugeen River, Ontario, should remain open to allow downstream passage of smolts in July/August, particularly as water temperature decreases in the autumn. It is beneficial to close the fishway to prevent accumulation of debris very early in the spring; however, the fishway should be opened as soon as possible each year, and remain open for as long as possible (i.e., until December)
Fishway Performance Meta-Analysis
Attraction and passage efficiency was reviewed and compared from 19 monitoring studies that produced data for evaluations of pool-and-weir, Denil, vertical-slot and nature-like fishways. Data from 26 species of anadromous and potamodromous fishes from 6 countries were separated by year and taxonomic family into a matrix with 101 records.
