Biotactic began developing an AI-based program to count fish passage at dams in 2013. Nearly a decade later the Biotactic Research Artificial Intelligence Network, a deep learning artificial intelligence program, has been meticulously trained and tested by Biotactic’s team of machine learning and computer vision programmers and senior fish biologists.
AI Data Services
Artificial Intelligence Based Fish CountsBiotactic began developing AI-based fish detection and counting systems in 2013 using a proprietary set of training data to generate deep learning models that can accurately detect untagged fish in a variety of environments and conditions. Field testing first began at fish ladders in Ontario in 2021. To date, our deep learning system has been used …
Arctic Char in Hope Bay
In July 2021 and 2022, Biotactic staff travelled to Hope Bay, Nunavut to build fish fences equipped with 2 BRAVO G3 fish monitoring and counting systems. Conducted in association with Minnow Environmental for Agnico Eagle Gold, this project is designed to measure the effectiveness of a rocky ramp fishway, or boulder garden, for restoring access for migratory Arctic Char and Lake Trout to and from Robert’s Lake. Movement will be monitored for several months and passage metrics will be calculated to determine passage success relative to baseline studies.
Videographic Surveys Saugeen River
Biotactic has been performing videographic surveys of fish passage at the Maple Hill dam fishway as well as within Otter Creek since 2018. Seasonal surveys are conducted using BRAVO M2 systems and the species, direction of movement, time, and condition of each unique fish is transcribed from recorded video.

Biotactic Fisheries Research & Monitoring – Biotactic Inc.
We began using underwater videography to monitor fish back in 1989 and things have changed a lot since then. Using our invaluable experience, we design, build and supply fish monitoring and fish counting systems.
