Most
of these large oak trees (as well as some other species)
in the ESPA and along the esker have been marked
for harvest - January 2005

This is part of
the Provincially Significant Wetland that will be lost
Health Value of this Urban Woodland and Wetlands - some quick
points...
- oxygen source (clean air)
- carbon dioxide sink (Kyoto Protocol- why do we pay
other countries to preserve their forests while we slash
ours for roads (with associated pollution etc))?
- water purification (ironically, water filtered by
significant gravel deposits and wetlands in the Hidden
Valley flows into the Grand River IMMEDIATELY upstream
from where the Region of Waterloo extracts drinking
water)
- Recreation, Escape, Absolute Beauty, Education,
Outstanding Species Diversity (as indicated in the
consultant report commissioned by the Region of
Waterloo), Environmentally
Sensitive Policy Areas (with no protection status in the
province of Ontario),
Provincially Significant Wetlands (protection status to
be determined)...
We recognize the need to accommodate more traffic in
South Kitchener. The cheapest, least environmentally
damaging (and public health threatening) plan is this:
A bridge could be built over the expressway to draw
traffic onto Hidden Valley Road to the new Wabanaki Rd.
Extension that will move traffic south to the very same
place where a road cutting through the forest would end.
November 2006: The
4 lane River Road extension will skirt and encroach upon
the northern area of the Hidden Valley Forest and wetland
- beginning in 2007
Messages should be sent to
HiddenValleyFriends@Biotactic.com. Postings will
be made regularly on this page.
Submitted November 5 2006 by Louisette
Lanteigne:
On Sunday I
was walking through Hidden Valley and
noticed an oil based chemical in the water that was
visible in all the aquatic areas of the park. I have
photos.
I have made a formal complaint to the Ministry of the
Environment in regards to this.
I also spotted three red back salamanders, seven deers
and a beaver.
My daughter and I put out a fire that someone lit in
the forest. The ambers were still smoking when we came
across it and we stomped it out.
I took photos of Stantec's work in the area. They know
this is an active recharge. it looks like they tapped
into an aquifer.
Thanks
Louisette Lanteigne
